On 26 May 2011, Ratko Mladic was arrest in Lazarevo, which is the village of the northern Serbia, by the Serbian Security force. He lived under the assumed name, Mirolad Komodic in the house which was owned by his relatives. (1) Now he is charged in two counts of genocides and persecutions, extermination, murder, deportation, inhumane acts, terror, unlawful attacks on civilians and taking of hostages . (2)(3)
During the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995, his force (Vojska Republike srbske) drove out Bosnians and Bosnian-Croats from Bosnia, and committed the Srebrenica Massacre on 1995. The Srebrenica Massacre is the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War. About 8000 Bosnian Muslims, mainly men and boys, were killed by Mladić's forces just for 10 days, from 11 to 22 July, 1995.
It took for 16 years to arrest him. On 11 May, Serge Brammertz visited to Serbia to offer Serbia to make an effort to arrest Mladić. Serbian president, Boris Tadić promised to do his best. (4) After only 15 days, Mladić was arrested. Including me, everyone want to know why he committed such a atrocious thing.
Many European countries's leader welcomed the arrest of Mladić as good news. (5)First of all, Serbia stepped forward to join the EU. Second, the arrest will bring new and peaceful relationship among the Balkans regions.
However, Mladić is still a hero for some Serbs. In the northern city of Novi Sad, about 500 of Mladić's supporters protested against Serbian police. The similar protest happend in Belgrade, and 35 people were arrested. Brammertz offers Serbia to do their best to arrest another war crime, Goran Hadžić.
Anyway, in my opinions. this is good news for war victims and Serbia. I believe it is significant step to re-build the peaceful and friendly relationship among the Balkans regions. As many countries report, I also think Serbia moved towards her goal to join the EU. (I am not sure if it is better to join the EU for Serbia or not..)At the same time, however I feel injustice. During the war, the UN was helpless. As the Srebrenica Massacre, especially, the UN established the Resolution 819 on 16 April 1993 and recognized that "Srebrenica is a safe area. Although they defined the safe area is "should be free from any armed attack or any other hostile act", the massacre happened. Further, the UN Secretary General could not deploy even the minimum number of UN troops over the all safe areas. One of reasons, all the mojor UN countries including the US, the UK, Russia, Spain and France, refused to send their troops to the battlefield. (6)The UN had a possibility to avoid the massacre. But now, they are about to judge war criminals of the Yugoslavian Wars.
